News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) is in its fifth year partnering with the Sisters School District to run the Community Schools program. SPRD organizes and runs the after-school programs at the elementary and middle schools as part of this program.
The goal of the after-school program is to improve the academic achievement among Sisters youth by offering after-school academic and enrichment opportunities for youth. The program provides homework assistance, tutoring, and SMART reading.
The homework portion of the program runs Monday-Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. and is free of charge.
SPRD also offers daily enrichment classes from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Enrichment opportunities at Sisters Elementary School include art, science, Lego robotics, music, and computers. Enrichment classes such as the Americana Project guitar program, archery, and cooking classes are also offered.
SPRD is offering a parenting series entitled Active Parenting Now. The next two sessions of this free class are scheduled for Monday, October 27, and Monday, November 3 at SPRD. The class runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and includes a light dinner and childcare.
Volunteers are needed as tutors and homework helpers at the elementary school. Call SPRD for more information.
The after-school program is primarily funded through donations and a grant from the Ford Family Foundation through the Oregon Community Foundation. The grant includes a matching grant in which funds raised to support the programs will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000. For more information about the afterschool program, parenting classes, or to make a donation, call SPRD at 541-549-2091.
