News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Schools are an investment. We invest in the education of our youth in order to keep the fabric of the nation and our communities strong. Sisters' schools are vital to the social and economic well-being of the community.
Voters should support the $14.5 million request for bond funding for Sisters schools because it is a good investment in the future of Sisters. Those buildings and facilities our ours, and we must maintain them in good repair.
The timing is right to act. The borrowing climate is good and we have a school board and staff that are capable of successfully overseeing the work to be done and ensuring that the taxpayers get the best return possible on their investment.
Some of the problems at the high school are the result of attempts to save money in the short term during construction. The roof was clearly a mistake. It's tempting for some to express frustration with that and other mistakes through a "no" vote, but that won't fix the problems - it will only make them more expensive and harder to fix in the long run.
The items to be addressed by the bond were thoroughly vetted by a citizens' committee with a wide range of experience and expertise. Their judgment was sound and their request reasonable.
Sisters Country voters should approve Measure 9-102 - and expect and demand accountability for every dollar spent through the community's investment.
