News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Winner supports Sisters of the Heart

When Sisters of the Heart raffled a quilt made by two women in Uganda, Anthony pitched in - and to her delight, she won the quilt. The Sisters resident is happy to support Sisters of the Heart, which has in recent years developed an arts-based vocational training center in Kapchorwa, Uganda, with continual assistance from Janet Storton of Sisters.

"It's an organization that I think is doing a wonderful job," Anthony said. "That connection with people in need and helping them to take care of themselves."

Anthony, a quilter herself, buys fabrics from Storton when she returns from her regular trips to Uganda.

Anthony moved to Sisters from Salem four years ago.

"I had married someone from the Carolinas," she recalled. He didn't take well to drippy weather on the west side, so, "I volunteered to retire and moved over here. Tough duty."

Anthony discovered Sisters while performing with a polka band at the Oktoberfest at St. Edward the Martyr Catholic Church.

She drove around Sisters, she recalled, and "I thought: I could live in this town."
