Athletic club inaugurates mind-body studio

The legacy of Sisters yoga teacher Myra Lani is enshrined in a new facility at Sisters Athletic Club. SAC opened the new Myra Lani Mind-Body Studio last month.

The new facility, located in the building adjacent to the club but accessible through an enclosed walkway, will host a range of classes in time slots that are more convenient for patrons. Classes run six days a week.

Classes are free to members and others can participate for a fee, according to SAC owner and manager Tate Metcalf.

Myra Lani was a beloved yoga teacher at SAC before she became ill with cancer. She died in 2013. Metcalf said it was important to honor her legacy through the name of the facility.

The new studio has a soft cork floor and is temperature controlled, which allows for "hot yoga," which is, well, a hot trend.

The room was painted with low-emission paint; the yoga mats are made of recycled rubber, and sound baffling is made from recycled blue jeans.

"We tried to go as environmental and sustainable as we could, and we wanted to do something different," Metcalf said.

The creation of a new, dedicated space for yoga and related activities - a "quiet studio" as Metcalf explains it - has created much-needed flexibility for the rest of the SAC facility.

"From a programming standpoint, it's opened up so many opportunities," Metcalf said.

The group exercise room now boasts equipment that allows for classes that focus on ring work, rope climbs and other functional strength activities that appeal to "the dudes," as Metcalf puts it.

SAC now offers a range of 45 classes in a wide variety of disciplines. That's valuable not only from a fitness standpoint - it's also good for business.

"When people do group exercise, statistically I know they're going to stick with their membership longer," Metcalf said.

SAC and the new Myra Lani Mind-Body Studio are located in the FivePine Campus at the east end of Sisters. For more information on SAC and its offerings, call 541-549-6878.
