News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
I'm writing this letter to ask The Nugget Newspaper to consider not publishing op-ed pieces by Rachel Marsden. Google Rachel Marsden and you get titles such as: "Rachel Marsden: Least Intelligent Mainstream Warmonger Disinformation Hack of All Time?" or how about: "Rachel Marsden: Professional sadist, stalker, liar."
This is a woman who calls water-boarding a learning experience: "I suppose that those who object to terror suspects getting water up the nose would say that, as a young competitive swimmer, I was also tortured. It was called 'hypoxic training'- swimming underwater and holding our breath until we passed out. Our coaches didn't call it torture, just an exercise in 'mental toughness.' So think of it this way - terror suspects are getting some free mental toughness training courtesy of the U.S. government."
Or here she is talking about European immigrants: "I'm talking about the people who can be credited for turning the city from a giant wilderness into the budding metropolis of today.
The place, and indeed the whole of my country, Canada, was pretty third-worldish until the English, French, and various other Europeans arrived and started planning and building infrastructure and government, and teaching the natives discipline, order, and capitalism...
It's no coincidence that the best countries in the world are either European or founded by Europeans.
Everywhere they go, European immigrants make things better - until they're asked to leave, at which point everything usually descends back into chaos.
Not that they ever get any thanks for it."
The problem with trying to explain what is wrong and misleading about her opinions is sometimes it's impossible to figure out what she's talking about. In her hit piece on President Obama, November 26, she mentions Keystone XL pipeline and Obama is seemingly OK with the oil being "shipped via rail through the operations of one of his billionaire campaign-donor friends." What does that even mean?
She wants us to think that everything was just fine in the Middle East - there were no U.S.-backed insurgencies and now because of Obama we have the Islamic State. Right.
Unemployment: Conservatives always say that the unemployment rate doesn't include those workers who have given up looking for jobs, but analysts do look at the employment-population ratio (percentage of our population who are actually working) and Obama's overall record beats Bush's.
Rachel starts off the editorial making the bizarre statement, "No leader of any democracy has ever sailed through a term in office unopposed." Does she really think there is no difference between the Republican's obstruction to Obama compared to any other president? But the most annoying and blatantly false statement is about affordable healthcare which she states, "basically just caused everyone else's already pricey premiums to become even more expensive."
Analysis from PricewaterhouseCoopers' Health Research Institute finds: "In 2014, the premiums for health plans offered on new state exchanges under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are comparable to - and in some cases lower than - those being offered by employers with similar levels of coverage." Her concern is for those poor insurance companies who need regulatory relief and help to absorb the costs of low-income clients.
The Nugget Newspaper can do better. Give us something to think about, something that makes us better - not this boring and poorly written propaganda. Rachel Marsden, please leave. Thanks.
