News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Richard "Dick" Elmer Marr entered his Heavenly home January 9, 2015 with his wife and children by his side, having fought a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Corwith, Iowa on April 10, 1943, Dick graduated from Corwith-Wesley High School in 1959 and William Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1963, where he met and married his wife of 51 years, Dianne (Mosteller) Marr.
He taught junior high math before being hired by Wm. Penn in 1965 as admissions counselor. Over the next 22 years, he served as director of admissions, then director of financial aid, retiring in 1987.
Inspired by his beekeeping hobby and a sense of adventure, Dick and Dianne moved to property near Sisters where Dick went into business with his brother-in-law as a beekeeper, pollinating crops from Wenatchee, WA to Chico, CA. His "homegrown" honey was enjoyed by many. Dick also worked in financial aid at COCC and in circulation for the Bend Bulletin. He and Dianne grew flowers and herbs for Schilling's Solar Gardens for many years.
Iowa friends remember Dick as an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, football referee and umpire. Oregon friends knew him as an enthusiastic gardener, filling his commercial-sized greenhouses with organic vegetables and colorful blooms, which he delighted in giving away to family and friends.
A servant of God, Dick was treasurer and board member of Sisters Church of the Nazarene, also volunteering as groundskeeper and building custodian. He and Dianne sang many duets for morning worship.
A loving "Grampie" full of fun and mischief, Dick took great pride in his grandchildren, attending as many school and sporting events as possible. Family time included camping, fishing, popping corn and playing card games until midnight. His recipes for apple danish and homemade bread will be passed down for generations, and no one will ever make a better breakfast!
Preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Pauline (Brown) Marr, Dick is survived by his wife, Dianne of Bend; son Jeff (Julie) Marr and granddaughter Nicole of Corvallis, OR; daughter Kristin (Greg) Klecker and grandchildren Karson and McKenzie of Bend, OR; brother Gene (Barbara) Marr of Allergan, MI; and nephew Kevin Marr.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 7 at Sisters Church of the Nazarene, 67130 Harrington Loop Rd., Bend. There will be a private interment at Deschutes Memorial Garden in Bend.
