News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Lady Outlaws out-point Blanchet

The girls tennis team won their match against Blanchet under sunny skies on Wednesday, April 15. Sisters won the match 10-8 on sets, as they split the matches 4-4. Two days later they tied 2-2 at home against Henley, and a day later attended the Madras Invitational.

On Wednesday, the Outlaws won three of their doubles matches.

Brenna Weems and Jesse Farr-Baenziger (No. 1 doubles) grabbed an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sophie Poole and Tessa Sullivan.

"Although Brenna and Jesse won, they still had some problems to solve on the court," said Coach Susan Fullhart. "Their opponents played with the net player directly in front of the back-court player. The girls had never played against this formation, so it took them a couple of games to solve it. But, solve it they did!"

At the No. 3 doubles spot, Annika Stadeli and Rylee Weber defeated JoJo Wilburn and Olivia Richardson 6-3, 6-1. Stadeli and Weber both served well and finished points from the net.

Kenna Cardin and Alana Lukens (No. 4 doubles) earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Najma Suri and Sophia Walmsly. The duo is becoming a very competitive team and is currently 3-0.

"Both these girls tenaciously ran down every ball in the match," said Fullhart. "Kenna was looking to pick off any ball within her reach at the net. I could see their communication getting better and better over the course of the match."

Engracia Diez also won her match at the No. 4 singles spot. Diez defeated Nel Crochetti 6-3, 6-2 through her steady play in the backcourt.

Henley only brought six girls to the match at Black Butte Ranch on Friday. Teams played two singles and two doubles matches, and then two play-back matches, where Henley girls who had already played, played other girls from the Sisters squad.

Maya Wieland and Gwen Knoop beat Erin Wolf and Katie Hastings 7-6, (7-5), 6-2. The duo was neck-and-neck in the first set and pulled it out in a close tiebreaker, which gave them the momentum they needed to start the second set.

"This was only their second match together, and both have been close," said Fullhart. "They communicate well, and work extremely well together on the court."

Mykaila Hartman (No. 2 singles) blanked Cietera VanRiper 6-0, 6-0.

"To win a match without losing a game is something to be proud of," said Fullhart. "Every aspect of Mykaila's game was consitent today, and that's just what she needed for the double-bagel."

Sisters also won two play-back matches.

Rylee Weber and Annika Stadeli earned a 5-7, 6-2, (10-7) victory. The duo started out a bit slow, but found their game in the second set and never looked back.

Lacey Gilmore and Alana Lukens also won their match with scores of 6-2, 7-5.

"Lacey transitioned well into doubles, and she and Alana both played very aggressively at the net," commented Fullhart. "That was the key to their victory today."

A day later, the No. 1 and No. 2 singles and doubles players attended the Madras Invitational. All players had a tough day, and most finished in the middle of the pack. Sisters finished seventh out of eight teams.
