News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters Country music-lovers got a first look at the talents of the Sisters Children's Choir when they performed at the Mother's Day performance of the Sisters High Desert Chorale.
Lola Knox, director of the children's choir says, "You ain't seen nothing yet; wait 'til you hear them sing the Shirley Temple songs in June."
The last concert of the Sisters Children's Choir for the school season will take place on Monday, June 8, at 5:30 p.m. at Fir Street Park. The choir will feature the hits of Shirley Temple, and two selections by the Sisters High Desert Bell Choir (providing ample time for the children to change into their surprise grand finale attire) and they may have a special surprise guest accompany the choir for one of the songs.
"The choir ranges in ages from 4 to 7, so this would be the year to honor Shirley," Knox said. "With a dimple in her cheek, a sparkle in her eye and a shock of curls in her hair."
Speaking about members of the choir, and how much she loves working with them, Knox reports, "There are seven of us: Colby Roberts, first grade; Tucker Roberts, pre-K; Vaughn Storton, first grade; Brooklyn Winningham, first grade; Janae Mitchell, kindergarten; Naomi Bennette, first grade; and Iain Bennette, kindergarten."
Knox, realizing choir is available in the schools, decided to start a choir which included children from all schools, public and private, and include home schooled children as well. She also kept the ages young since choir starts at third grade at Sisters Elementary School and she didn't want to interfere...
"We had about 14 at Christmas," Knox said, "but lost a lot to T-ball and various other more tempting sports-related pursuits. Alas, the arts cannot compete with sports... Sisters is such a beautiful place to enjoy sports, so I can't say that I blame them! After-school opportunities are boundless here and kids have to follow their hearts!"
Amy Bennette, who has two children in the choir said, "Sisters Children's Choir has been a great experience for both our children. They have loved the songs Lola has selected, and learned so much from her musical guidance. Performing on stage was a highlight of their year, and they look forward to going to choir practice every week!"
"I plan on doing a more aggressive campaign in the fall to recruit more singers!" Knox says. "I couldn't have asked for more talented children who actually love to sing, and the parents have been more than supportive and involved! I honestly don't know who has more fun - me or the kids! Reviving the Shirley Temple hit songs this spring was just F-U-N!"
