News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
There is a special "zoo" in the library community room created by children who have participated in the Super Animals - Super Powers summer program. The zoo is part of the Friends of the Sisters Library (FOSL) August/September art exhibit.
Paige Bentley-Flannery, community librarian, introduced the idea of super animals to children during story time this summer, to the after-school kids before school ended, to the children in summer school who make weekly visits to the library, and to youngsters who come once a week from Sisters Park & Recreation District.
Although art is an integral part of the library's programs for children, this August and first half of September is the first time the children's artwork has been displayed as part of the FOSL monthly art exhibits. It will also be part of the Fourth Friday Art Stroll on August 28 at the library. Families with children are encouraged to stop by, view the super-animals exhibit, and receive free popsicles.
The children were encouraged to focus on a particular "super animal" and decide how it would save the day. On their own, or as a family project, they made pictures and named their super-animals and decided what superpowers they possessed. There are drawings of super-turtles, elephant, bunny, duck and others.
The materials used to create the drawings included chalk, pencils, markers, beads, and natural materials like dirt and leaves. Superanimals are still being created outside the library on the sidewalk using chalk. Children are invited to stop by to view them and try their hand at creating their own.
A number of children recently visited the library for Super Academy Day, dressed in costumes and capes depicting their favorite superhero. All of these activities are in support of the 24/7 summer reading program called Every Hero Has a Story. If you haven't already, stop by the library and pick up a card on which to record your child's reading at least 24 minutes every day. There will be free books and other prizes awarded to 24/7 readers.
Off the Wall, an exhibit of artwork literally coming off the walls of members of the FOSL art committee, is on display in the computer room from August 1-September 15. A variety of art media and subject matter are available for viewing, including work from a number of well-known local artists.
