Lady Outlaws mauled by the Lions

The Lady Outlaws fell 5-2 at Cottage Grove (CG) on Tuesday, September 29. The loss marked their first conference loss of the season.

Cottage Grove took a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play, but the Outlaws answered back eight minutes later to tie it up 1-1. The goal was a result of great combination passes between Michaela Miller and Nika Chick, which led to a breakaway goal by Chick. The ball slid past the keeper to the far left corner of the net.

The Lions scored on a scramble in the box at the 18-minute mark, and off another scramble in the box six minutes later. Coach Thomas Draxler told The Nugget he thought the goal was actually knocked in by one of the Outlaws' defenders. At the half the Outlaws were down 3-1.

CG scored two more goals in the second half, and was on top 5-1 with 12 minutes left on the clock.

Sisters scored their final goal in the 71st minute. Olivia Stewart got a breakaway shot on goal, but the Lions' keeper was able to get the save. Tessa O'Hern corralled the ball, and followed with a shot from the 18-yard line into the center of the box.

Draxler said, "She had an open shot because the keeper had come out on Olivia's breakaway.

"Cottage Grove was a quality team," said Draxler. "It was a very rough game, even more so than the previous games. We played very aggressive as well, but it wasn't enough."

The Outlaws were scheduled to play at home against Sutherlin on Thursday, October 1, but due to the shooting at Umpqua Community College the game was rescheduled for Wednesday, October 7, at home in Sisters. The Outlaws will play at Sweet Home, Thursday, October 8.
