News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Lady Outlaws started their week with a 3-0 sweep over Sutherlin at home on Wednesday, October 7, and a day later posted a sweep at Sweet Home.
Sisters started out strong in their match with Sutherlin on Wednesday, and kept a strong tempo throughout the first set to notch the 25-11 win. The Outlaws have been running some different plays from serve-receive and really pushed through to make those plays happen.
The second set started out slow, but Sisters regained momentum and finished strong to take the set 25-16. The Outlaws relaxed and let down in the third set, and were unable to bring any sort of tempo or drive to their game. Coach Jason Myhre told The Nugget that that type of play is not something the Outlaws can afford to allow, and it almost cost them the set. Sisters managed to fight through and get the win at 25-22.
Myhre said, "I'm really happy with the motion from our middles in keeping Sutherlin's tall middles shut down. Peytan Zanck and Brooke Knirk really targeted in to their middles, and forced a lot of tips that our defense was able to pick up."
Players did a great job serving, and three were perfect from the line. Hawley Harrer went 13/13 with four aces, Ashlynn Cantwell went seven-for-seven with one ace, and Kendra Sitz was three-for-three. Jessie Brigham went 12/15 with two aces, Peytan Zanck went five-for-six with one ace, Allie Spear went 12/14 with one ace, and Alex Hartford was 12/15 with two aces.
Harrer and Spear both had 12 kills in the match. Cantwell recorded seven kills and Zanck and Brigham each contributed six.
Cantwell dished out 24 assists, and Harrer added 11. Brigham led the team with 22 digs.
Kendra Sitz came off the bench and really started to get in a groove by the end of the third set.
"Kendra comes in during tough times and really steps in there," said Myhre. "She keeps a great attitude, and contributes to the team."
The match against Sutherlin was a make-up match that was rescheduled from last week due to the tragic shooting at Umpqua Community College. Sisters' players handed out roses to the Sutherlin players and there was a moment of silence before the start of the match.
Myhre said, "I think the tragedy reached far beyond their community, and our hearts and prayers are with them as they work through it. I am proud of them to come to Sisters and represent their school and community in this tough time."
A day later the Outlaws logged a win on the road against the Huskies with scores of 25-10, 25-12, and 25-15.
Sisters played an outstanding match against the Huskies. The Outlaws started the game with a different rotation, to push the girls out of their comfort zone a bit, and they came out fired up and easily took the set.
The Outlaws continued to work together and the team effort earned the win. Myhre told The Nugget that the stats don't really show everything that really took place on the court.
"Players were talking and moving with such a great synergy that it was hard to break our momentum," said Myhre.
Spear led the squad with 11 kills, and was also 19/20 from the service line with five aces. Cantwell went nine-for-10 from the line, Knirk was six-for-nine with four aces, and Brigham went 13/16 from the service
line.
Harrer and Zanck put down seven kills each, and Knirk added five kills. Brigham led the defense with 15 digs.
Myhre made special note of Brooke Knirk and Peytan Zanck.
"Brooke and Peytan did an amazing job freezing out Sweet Home's tall middles, and shut down anything that came their direction," stated Myhre.
The Outlaws also got great contributions from Emma Houck and Cassidy Ling-Scott, who both played strong.
"It's really hard to pin-point one individual player that stood out above all the rest because they all had particular assignments and took care of them," said
Myhre. "They all showed true team synergy and really looked amazing. I'm proud of all of them for what they brought
tonight."
Sisters was to play against Elmira on October 13. The Outlaws will play at Junction City on Thursday, October 15.
