News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

David W. Childress July 29, 1948 - October 11, 2015

David (Dave) W. Childress passed away October 11, 2015, surrounded by his family and friends after a long battle with cancer.

Dave, 67, was born July 29, 1948, in Roseburg, Oregon, where he grew up. His parents are Joyce E. Childress of Sisters, Oregon, and the late Arthur L. (Roy) Childress.

On March 26, 1994, Dave married Catherine Johnston in Atlanta, Georgia. While there, he worked as the Director of Procurement and Logistics for GWS, Inc. In 1997, they were transferred to Kansas City, Missouri. During their years in Kansas City, they built a vacation home in Yachats, Oregon, where they visited and later retired in 2002. In 2005, they moved to Sisters.

While living in Sisters, Dave attended The Chapel in the Pines in Camp Sherman. There he was enfolded by a group of loving and supportive friends.

Dave enjoyed participating in car shows in Central Oregon and the coast of Oregon with his 1934 Ford Cabriolet. His car won many awards, but his favorites were the "People's Choice" awards won at the Sisters "Glory Daze" Car Show.

Not only was he an avid Oregon Ducks football fan, he loved all college football. Dave spent his Saturdays in the fall watching and discussing the games with his friends in Chattanooga, TN, and lamenting the attention given to the SEC by the media and lack of it to the Pac-12.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Catherine; daughter Andrea Childress (Felix Miret) of Eugene; granddaughters Fina and Mariona Miret of Eugene; mother Joyce Childress of Sisters; brother Craig Childress (Tracy) of Pendleton; nieces Lindsey Presley (T.J.) of Pendleton, and Cristin Childress of San Francisco; and uncle Leslie Davie of Isle of Wight, England.

Dave was preceded in death by his father, Arthur L. (Roy) Childress; sister Tammy Childress; and his Davie and Childress grandparents.

The family wishes to thank their friends and the medical staff at St. Charles Hospital Cancer Center and OHSU for their love, support and quality of care during Dave's illness.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at The Chapel in the Pines, Camp Sherman, on Thursday, October 29, 2015, at 1 p.m., with Ed Beacham officiating. A reception will follow at the Camp Sherman Community Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to The Chapel in the Pines, c/o 300 W. Hood Ave., Sisters, OR 97759.
