News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Lady Outlaws had a devastating week, with a 4-0 loss to Cottage Grove on Tuesday, October 27, followed by a 5-1 loss at home to Klamath Union (KU) on Saturday, October 31.
On Tuesday, Sisters faced Cottage Grove in a head-to-head battle to determine who would be the No. 1 seed. Unfortunately, the Outlaws lost the battle and had to play against KU four days later in a play-in game.
Saturday's game against KU was played under adverse weather conditions, to say the least. Teams played in very high winds, up to 50 miles per hour. At one point during the contest, a tree fell in the nearby forest, and the loud crash was easily heard by players and fans.
Neither team was really able to play their game as planned, but KU did a better job, and walked away with the win.
Sisters played well throughout the contest, and actually dominated play in the first half. At the break, teams were deadlocked at 0-0. The second half was a different story, and KU was able to get several fast breaks.
Ten minutes into the second half, KU scored their first goal, and proceeded to tack on two more. With five minutes left on the clock, the Outlaws scored their first and only goal to make it a 3-1 game.
Nika Chick chipped the ball over the defense, and the keeper came out to get the ball. The wind slowed the ball down, and Olivia Watts got to the ball first. Watts trapped the ball with her chest, the ball fell to her feet, and she sent the ball past the keeper and into the box for the score.
KU got two more goals on fast breaks and secured the win.
Coach Thomas Draxler said, "In the second half, we sent a lot of through balls forward, but the wind was at our backs, so the ball always went clear to the keeper. The girls came out today to play hard, but we just didn't get the results we wanted."
Draxler added, "I really want to thank the girls for staying happy and positive throughout the season, for trying hard, for learning new skills, and for creating many fond memories. I look forward to seeing what next year holds."
