News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

That's what Friends are for

It's been said that "volunteers make the world go 'round," and indeed it does seem to be that way. Take the Friends of the Sisters Library (FOSL) for example.

Once a month, the volunteer members of the FOSL Board get together at the Sisters Library to make plans on how to make money to help keep the Sisters Library going smoothly and to pump a sizable amount of cash into the Deschutes Public Library System (DPLS).

At the moment the FOSL Board is operating with nine local volunteers, but it would work even smoother if they could get the full complement of 12 members. There's a lot of work to be done.

The most obvious effort on the part of FOSL is the various art exhibits offered monthly in the cabinets as one walks into the foyer, the variety of art in the computer room and the always-changing Community Room.

One of the elements in the FOSL operations that requires constant attention - and produces income - is the Book Corner, located right next to the book return area at the north end of the library. It's open Sundays and Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The whole operation is run by volunteers, from the manager, Lynne Wood, who spends a lot of time making sure all the volunteers running the operation are there when they said they would be, and coordinating it with the DPLS crew running the library.

Some of the "local" books available in the Book Corner:

• "That Was Yesterday" by Tillie Wilson and Alice Scott, published in 2000 - A unique history of the town of Sisters, Oregon and the surrounding area.

• "Bringing in the Hay" by David A. Asson, 2003 - A nostalgic history of agriculture's most romantic crop.

• "What's Cooking In Sisters" by Charlotte Kiffe Milan, 2010 - Beautifully illustrated recipe collection gathered by the Friends of the Sisters Library.

In addition to the local books available there are hundreds of (gently) used books. Anyone wanting to donate gently used books to FOSL can bring them in on either Sunday or Tuesday afternoon when the Book Corner is open.

If you have time to help out at the Book Corner, let Lynne know by contacting her at [email protected]

Starting on "Black Saturday," November 28, running through December 29, all books and electronic objects will sell four for the price of three, with all proceeds going toward supporting the Sisters Library programs, and other DPLS projects.
