Outdoor science to be featured February 20

Are you smarter than a monkey? COCC will happily test you and let you know. Can you ride a bike? Jon Renner is betting that you can't do it. Can you fly a plane? ENERGYneering Solutions will let you try to stay in the air on their flight simulator. Once you've gotten your wings on the simulator, you can go to the real thing and try your hand at flying a paper airplane from one end of the gym to the other end.

All this will happen at the Sisters Science Fair at Sisters High School on Saturday, February 20, from noon to 4 p.m. This year's theme is outdoor science and students and community members will be showing off their best.

The outdoor science theme is evident in the multiple displays for astronomy. The Sisters Astronomy Club will be on hand with telescopes, and the Sun River Observatory and the Central Oregon Rocket Club will dazzle you with the rich science of our earth and sky. The Sisters High School Planetarium will be set up to give you a perspective on our beautiful night skies.

Science and art are two disciplines that always go hand-in-hand. The Sisters Science Fair Sci-Art Contest is open to all students living in the Sisters School District. Photo images using a .jpg format should be submitted by February 12. The contest photo entry form and rules are available on the Sisters Science Club website at http://www.sistersscienceclub.com.

The highlight of the science fair is always the Design, Construct and Compete (DCC) contest. A mousetrap car competition is sure to enthrall and excite the cheering audience. This year the mousetrap car has to be built such that it can run in a curved path that will change as the competition advances. The competition begins at 2:30 p.m. in the high school gym. Cash prizes make this event a fierce competition. Rules can be found on the Sisters Science Club website.
