Sisters Science Fair this weekend

The countdown has begun. Sisters is just days away from the Sisters Science Fair.

Scheduled for Saturday, February 20 at Sisters High School from noon to 4 p.m., this popular Sisters community event is sponsored by the Sisters Science Club and is free for everyone. Science enthusiasts and science neophytes wander through the high school commons area to discover the treasures of science.

This year's theme, "The Science of Nature," will be evident in the SciArt Contest display. Sisters students have been busy photographing their artwork or out in the field taking photos. Many of these photos, along with the winners, are displayed prominently at the Science Fair.

Astronomy is always a popular topic and, with the newly detected gravitational waves in the news recently, the Sisters Astronomy Club will be on hand to answer some questions about black holes. A planetarium will be set up in the high school media room. Moon rocks and meteorites will top off the astronomical experience, and the Sisters Rocket Club will be there to show off some launching techniques.

The Robotics Club and the Lego Robotics Team have working displays to challenge your imagination. A flight simulator will challenge your ability to fly without crashing to the ground and a gyroscope will challenge your orientation.

Have you ever tried your hand at pool on an elliptical pool table? With just one pocket, a dot and a cue and ball, you can discover the science of angles. Or, maybe you'd like to try your legs on a backwards bicycle? Both are sure to tickle your inner scientific self and challenge your brain.

The Design, Construct, Compete (DCC) Contest will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a competition of simple mousetrap cars by Sisters Elementary School and Black Butte School students. Following this, the more complex mousetraps cars will try to navigate barriers and distances for top cash prizes.

The Sisters Science Fair is an event for the entire family, with many hands-on activities, plenty of scientists to answer your questions and fascinating displays from our Sisters students.
