News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The boys lacrosse team had a breakout game on Thursday, April 14, and snapped their losing streak with a 7-4 win at Ridgeview.
Keaton Green was assisted by Ethan Morgan for Sisters' first goal of the contest. Ridgeview also scored a goal, and at the close of the first quarter the score was tied up 1-1.
The game stayed close as both teams scored three goals in the second, and at the half the score was even at 4-4. Sisters goals came from three different players. Jude Carhart scored with an assist from Green, Willie Stewart scored thanks to an assist from Carhart, and Samson Magnus knocked in one off a Morgan assist.
The Outlaws pulled away in the third quarter. Trey Stadeli started the scoring with an unassisted goal, and later Carhart scored off a Stadeli assist. The final goal of the quarter was an unassisted goal from Green.
Sisters held Ridgeview off in the final quarter to secure the win.
The Outlaws changed up their lines during the game and moved players to different positions, which sparked their offensive play that has been stagnant in their recent losses.
Coach Eric Wentzel told The Nugget that the entire team contributed to the win.
"Without all the components of the game working, we wouldn't have been successful," said Wentzel. "This is the first game where we saw the players buying into what we've been practicing all season. It was cool to see both Jude (Carhart) and Keaton (Green) put in two goals each and assist on one goal each. It was a great win coming off the tough game against Summit earlier in the week.
"We still have some work to do on controlling the ball in the offensive zone, but this is an area that improves with practice and confidence," added Wentzel.
Senior Captain David Keeton led the team with 12 ground balls. Keeton led the Outlaws defense to close down Ridgeview in the second half. David also played long-stick midfielder, which helped on the defensive side, as well as getting the ball into the offensive zone.
"David's play and emotion showed why the team selected him as one of their captains," said Wentzel.
The Outlaws took a total of 35 shots, which is a huge improvement over recent games.
Two days earlier, the Outlaws suffered a crushing 20-0 loss at home against Summit.
Summit is ranked among the top three teams in the state, which really tested the young Outlaws squad.
Casey Warburton had a career-high 15 saves in goal.
"I'm really proud of how Sisters carried themselves during the game, especially facing a team of Summit's caliber. After the game when we told Summit we only had three returning varsity players, and the rest a young crew, and they were impressed on how we played and commented on the future potential of this team," said Wentzel.
