Garden fair supports education

For the last 13 years Shannon Pollard has worked with Sisters Elementary School students in the school's Garden Club. Once a week for most of the school year, students in kindergarten through fourth grade attend Garden Club either during their lunch recess or immediately after school. They learn about plants, seeds, compost worms and simply enjoy getting their hands dirty.

Last Saturday, Pollard, her family and a few dedicated volunteers hosted the 13th Annual Garden Fair at Sisters Elementary School. Close to 100 hanging pots, along with several vegetable starts, were available for sale.

"This was a great year," said Pollard. "We sold close to everything we had - the kids worked so hard, it was nice to see so many people come and support what they have been doing."

Along with the plant sale there was a silent auction filled with goodies donated from local businesses; face painting; a cakewalk; a barbecue lunch and a dance performance by the Sisters Dance Academy.

"We come every year," said one sale attendee. "The baskets are beautiful."

"My kids were in this club; now they are in high school," said another attendee. "I want to support the club for other students."

All proceeds made from the Garden Fair directly support the Sisters Elementary School Garden Club. The cost for each student to participate throughout the entire school year is $5. The Garden Fair showcases the students' hard work and helps purchase items needed for next school year.

The current greenhouse is located behind the bus barn at the elementary school. The club is planning to add an outdoor garden space in the same vicinity within the next year.

Even if community members were unable to attend the Garden Fair there are several ways they can support the Garden Club. There are a few baskets still available to purchase, and the club can always use donations of seeds, plastic plant pots and other gardening-related items.
