Sisters Library displays quilts

In conjunction with the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, some of the quilts made and donated by local quilters for the third edition of the Men Behind the Quilts calendar are currently on display in the main room of the Sisters Library.

Hanging from the large wooden beams are quilts of every description, with the month of the calendar noted in the lower right-hand corner. These quilts are used to carefully cover most of each of 12 Sisters men who contribute their time and effort behind the scenes of the annual Quilt Show.

The quilts will be on display until July 5, when they will be taken down in preparation for the Calendar Preview Party and Calendar Quilt Auction to be held on Wednesday, July 6, from 5:30-8 p.m. in the teachers' tent behind Sisters Art Works. Tickets for the event are available for $25 at the SOQS office at 220 S. Ash St., No. 4.

For the month of July, in the library community room will be a quilt display of a very different kind. The MIX (Materials in Extreme) quilt group from Portland will be exhibiting their 24-by-30-inch pieces in portrait orientation depicting "A Sense of Place: The Allison Inn 2015."

After visiting and photographing elements of the eco-friendly inn and spa in Newburg, Oregon, each of the eight quilters created two quilted rectangles, one depicting a hardscape/architectural aspect of the inn and the other portraying a softscape/landscape view of the lovely inn gardens or the lushness of the Yamhill wine country surrounding the inn.

Each artist/quilter chose their own style to create their work, some representational while others used a more abstract style. Methods of design range from Photoshop deconstruction to blow-ups of small areas of a photo to interpretation of the "essence" into a new design. Techniques vary widely as well, with piecing, raw-edge appliqué, fusing, and several outer-edge finishes appropriate for small pieces. The resulting works have distinct personalities that are exciting individually yet cohesive as a group.

During the month of July in the library computer room, the Friends of the Sisters Library will be hanging posters of past Quilt Shows. All of the quilting exhibits will be available for viewing during regular library hours - Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
