News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Donald M. Oliver February 11, 1929 - June 9, 2016

Donald M. Oliver, 87, of Sisters, died June 9, his wife Ellen by his side. Born in Elkins, West Virginia he graduated from Parsons High School, attended Michigan State University and received a degree in forestry. He was called up for service in the Army and served in the Korean Conflict as a platoon leader of the 72nd Tank Battalion. After his service he received a master's degree in forest genetics at CSU. Don worked on the Siuslaw National Forest, retired in Corvallis in 1984, then moved to Sisters in 1985.

Don was a founding member of the Cascade Horizon Band, playing the baritone. He was PER of the Redmond Elks. He was active in the Sisters community, volunteering in the Sisters High School woodworking shop, helping to build the first HfH home in Sisters and serving on the Crossroads Property Association Board of Directors. He volunteered at the Red Cross.

Don enjoyed the outdoors; sailing, canoeing, hiking, biking, hunting. He was a fine woodworker, building beautiful furniture. He liked to say, "If it's not perfect, it's not done."

Don and Ellen were happily married for 60 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen; three children, Judy Oliver-Rose, Mary Ellen Pastorino (Paul), James Oliver (Christine); and eight grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 31, at FivePine Lodge and Conference Center in Sisters.

The family requests that any donations be sent to the Cascade Horizon Band or BrightSide Animal Center in Redmond.
