News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
It's time to break out the wine, the lemonade, the snacks, and the animated conversation for the Fourth Friday Art Stroll through Sisters' truly unique galleries. The stroll is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, and most galleries will be open. Sisters Arts Association's new Gallery Walk Maps are available in each of the galleries, or online at www.sistersartsassociation.org/contact/.
Hood Avenue Art is featuring mixed-media artist Patricia Freeman-Martin and book artist Kelley Salber. Both share an interest in the narrative and symbolic, as well as a love of paper. Drop in and sign up for upcoming workshops, Introduction to Pastels on Aug. 10, and Vino Van Gogh Watercolors and Oils, on Aug. 17.
At Twigs Gallery, fabrics are used for drawing, painting, printing and embellishing, making for a very versatile medium, as a wearable piece of art or a wall hanging or vessel. Christina Brown says the world has enough hard edges, so she feels fiber art softens that impact. Mary Goodson layers sheer dyed silks and stitching to create texture and depth. Terry Grant creates wall art using commercial and recycled fabrics with quilting and surface design techniques. Laura Jaszkowski uses the raw edge appliqué method, free-motion quilting and mixed media.
Clearwater Gallery's featured artists are Garth Williams and Amanda Houston, from 4 to 6 p.m. Williams's impressionistic oil paintings embody the outdoor way of life. Houston is primarily a pastel painter who dabbles in oils; her pieces capture dramatic landscapes and stunning moments.
Sisters Gallery and Frame Shop celebrates the ever-popular work of Paul Alan Bennett, including a vintage painting, "Icarus On The Metolius," from 2003. "Icarus" was the first time Bennett came up with a name before creating the painting. By special arrangement "Icarus" is being re-sold with proceeds to go to the Sisters Library.
Find fun and whimsy at Alpenhimmel's Pop-Up Gallery: colorful, naive paintings by Charity Alva; quirky assemblage art by Terri Smith and Justine Gibb and Laurie Santa Maria's mosaic jewelry. A portion of the artists' proceeds will be donated to support Circle of Friends in Sisters.
Join Kathy Deggendorfer at Studio Redfield, celebrating Kathy's Dog Show. Redfield will be showing Kathy's vibrant, original paintings that inspired the whimsical tile line of cheerful dogs: trivets, wall hangings, treat boxes, house numbers, etc.
At Imagination Gallery, Ken Scott introduces three major castings in bronze, and several freshly hammered, flame-cut, steel lamps. Of course, he always offers lively discussions on his approach to art and philosophy of life.
Gary Cooley's Collection Gallery will spotlight the landscape photography of Lisa Belt. Lisa has a unique way of capturing the essence and the beauty of the scene.
Joining the Fourth Friday Gallery Walk this month is Raven Makes Gallery at 182 E. Hood Ave. Owners Chris Morin and LaRita Chapman invite you to browse the collection of authentic Native American art and craft that explores the theme of cultural identity, from traditional origins to contemporary perspectives.
Other galleries open for Fourth Friday Art Stroll include Cha for the Finest, The Jewel, Beacham's Clock Company, Cowgirls and Indians, Things Etc., Dyrk Godby Gallery, Old West Collectables, Bedouin, Canyon Creek Pottery, and the Gallery at Sisters Library.
The monthly Quick Draw continues with a $100 gift certificate from Brand 33, the restaurant at Aspen Lakes Golf Course. Brand 33 is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. It is committed to local sustainable ingredients in the preparation of its recipes, sourcing the freshest, highest-quality meat, seafood, produce and poultry. Art Strollers may register one time only in each gallery, so the more galleries you visit, the greater your opportunity to win.
