News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Betty Mae Nelson Kernen February 26, 1929 - August 2, 2016

Betty Mae Nelson was born to Erma (Phippen) Nelson and Neils Nelson in Elgin, Oregon. She graduated from Elgin High School and attended Boise Bible College in Boise, Idaho. She married William ("Bill") A. Kernen on June 8, 1947, in Elgin, Oregon. During their marriage they lived in Minnesota, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California. Betty's dreams were fulfilled by being a stay-at-home mom to her two children.

Betty and Bill moved to Sisters in 1983. Bill preceded her in death in 1989.

Betty's hobbies included gardening, reading, crocheting and writing letters, and her love for her cats and dogs is unparalleled.

Betty is survived by her sister, Maxine Lee of Castle Rock, Washington; her brother Larry (Joyce) Nelson of Salem, Oregon; son William C. Kernen of New York City; and daughter Susan B. Windell of Sisters, Oregon. She had three grandsons: Garett Kernen, Matthew (Lelah) Windell, and Caleb (Michelle) Windell; and five great-grandchildren: Elizabeth and Joey Windell; Juliet Kernen; and Auna and William Windell. She also leaves behind her "son-in-law," Stephen Perry of Sisters.

Per her request, no service is planned. Donations in her memory may be made to Russell's Place at Three Rivers Animal Shelter in Madras. Her family wants to recognize the loving, professional care of Hospice of Redmond and At Home Care Group and thanks them from the bottom of their hearts.
