News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Gwen L. Newport March 9, 1928 - August 25, 2016

Gwen Newport, long-time Black Butte Ranch resident, passed away quietly at Absolute Serenity's Pennington Place in Sisters in the early hours of August 25.

Born on March 9, 1928, in LaJunta, Colorado, she was the youngest of two daughters of Kay and Gus Remington.

She grew up in Colorado and Nebraska, moving to Oregon in the 1950s and spending much of the last 40 years at Black Butte Ranch.

On March 9, 1944, in Ainsworth, Nebraska, she met Carl Newport at the nearby Army Air Force base USO dance on her 16th birthday. It turned out that it was also Carl's birthday. They were together from that day forward. In 1947, Carl and Gwen were married, Carl received his B.S. in Forest Management, and they headed west to begin his career as a forester as District Ranger in Gunnison, Colorado, where their first son, Chuck was born. They spent several summers in the Rocky Mountains, living in wall tents and mountain cabins.

In the fall of 1950, the family relocated to Corvallis, Oregon, where Carl pursued his M.S. in Forest Management. In 1951 he enrolled at New York State College and received his Ph.D. in Forest Economics. They moved back to Colorado for him to teach Forest Economics at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where their second son, Jim was born.

The family eventually settled in Portland and lived there from 1959 until Carl retired.

During those career years for Carl, Gwen steadfastly supported him and her two sons, growing up through grade school, high school and college. During those years, many trips were made to Central Oregon, and in 1971 they purchased a lot a Black Butte Ranch and built their retirement home.

In retirement, Carl served on the Board of Directors of the World Forestry Center. He and Gwen traveled all over the world, attending conferences and meetings and exploring during those years.

She loved traveling and everything in the outdoors. She was very athletic and remained active into her 70s, skiing, hiking, golfing and playing tennis.

Gwen is survived by two sons, Chuck and Jim of Sisters; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family is very grateful to Absolute Serenity, David and Leah Tolle, the caregivers at Pennington Place and Partners in Care for her care during the last months of her life.

Remembrances can be made in her name to Partners in Care, 2075 N.E. Wyatt Ct., Bend, OR 97701.

Carl and Gwen have been reunited. The family will have a private gathering in her honor at a later date.
