News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Every year, late in the afternoon of October 31, motorists on their way through Sisters get caught in a traffic jam. They are unsuspecting casualties of the annual Sisters Rotary Halloween Parade, a happy event that sees hundreds of costumed young children, accompanied by their parents or caregivers, trick-or-treating among businesses in town.
The Rotary Club partners with the Sisters Library to promote, organize, and lead the event. It will be held on Halloween afternoon, with the first groups departing from Fir Street Park (at the corner of Fir Street and Main Avenue) at 3 p.m. Children must register for the event, and registration forms are available at the library and Sisters Elementary School. For last-minute participants, there will be a registration table at the park on the day of the parade. Participants are also asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank.
Rotarians will be manning the pedestrian crossings on Cascade Avenue and Elm Street, and ask that all children cross Cascade Avenue there. Two routes go through town, one on the east side of Elm Street and one on the west side. Groups of between 50 and 75 children (and accompanying adults) head off from Fir Street Park, with the first group heading west, the next going east, and so on. Leaders will be identified either by costume or a bright orange vest.
Motorists are advised to seek an alternative route through town and are asked to also avoid Hood Avenue and Main Avenue, as trick-or-treaters will be using those streets.
