Sisters art students honored

From a felt sandwich to a deer sculpture, gallerygoers enjoyed seeing student artwork displayed at the 2017 Central Oregon Scholastic Art Awards Ceremony. Sisters middle and high school students were well-represented, with more than two-dozen students awarded for their inspiring artwork.

Last Saturday, February 11, middle and high school art students and their families gathered to view the art gallery and receive their award certificates. The annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation's longest-running recognition program for artistic teens grades 7-12.

"I love how the awards validates students' personal vision, and how the ceremony brings a togetherness to a bunch of talented individuals. It gives them the recognition that they deserve, and gets them excited about their future," said Bethany Gunnarson, visual arts teacher at Sisters middle and high schools.

The more than 730 submissions from 16 schools were judged by a panel of artists, educators, and creative professionals. The jurors used the "blind adjudication" method, where they did not know the student's identity and judged the art based solely on its merits. Judges looked for originality, personal vision, and technical skills in categories including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, print-making and digital art.

The art will be on display at the Pence Pinckney Art Gallery at Central Oregon Community College through March 17. Then Gold Key winning pieces will move on to national judging.
