No one was quite sure what the Outlaws swimmers had in them when they hit the pool for the District meet last weekend. Their season has been badly disrupted by weather - events and practices canceled.
"We actually had a really tough season," said Coach Brittany Morioka. "It was really up in the air in terms of how they would do."
The last two weeks were the first and only consistent training time the Outlaws got this season. They made the most of it. The relay teams set new school records on their way to earning berths in state competition, and Brooke Robillard broke her own school record in the breaststroke with a time of 1:11.80 to supplant her previous mark of 1:13.02
The 200 medley relay squad - Lydia Bartlett, backstroke; Brooke Robillard. breaststroke; Meredith Mandal, butterfly; Hawley Harrer, freestyle - clocked 1:57.22 to beat the old mark of 1:58.82
The same girls edged their old time of 1:44.80 to set a new SHS standard of 1:44.38200 in the 200 freestyle relay and hit 3:48.90 to supplant 3:51.19 in the 400 free relay.
Bartlett and Mandal placed second and fifth respectively in the 500 freestyle, also earning individual state berths.
The Outlaws will travel to Mt. Hood Community College next weekend for the meet.
Morioka said that the Outlaws trained hard on their own to achieve such a high standard under trying conditions.
"They just really stepped up and believed they could do it," she said. "And they did."
