Movie house offers art event screenings

With the solar eclipse and most of the summer behind us, it might be easy to conclude that summer is all but over.

But at Sisters Movie House, it is a time to reprise some of this year's most popular special event arts programming. For the final six days of August, from Saturday, August 26 through Thursday, August 31, the theater will feature one "event" per night, showcasing fine art and music.

The special event movies all start at 5 p.m. each day, with tickets priced at $12.50 per film for all ages.

On Saturday, August 26 and Tuesday, August 29, it will be the Exhibition on Screen offering of "I, Claude Monet" featuring both the artist's own words from his voluminous diaries and a special look at dozens of his most-famous paintings.

On Sunday, August 27, and Wednesda, August 30, the cinema will give another screening to the moving documentary about legendary saxophonist John Coltrane , "Chasing Trane." Narrated by Denzel Washington and featuring a scintillating soundtrack, "Chasing Trane" has been lauded by critics and fans alike. It premiered at Sisters Movie House in June and is back for just two more limited showings.

Then on Monday, August 28, and Thursday, August 31, it is another deeper look into 19th and 20th century painters, this time focusing on American impressionists in "The Artist's Garden."

"Along with the Monet film, these were two of our most popular special events from our 'Spring into Culture' series," said Drew Kaza, owner and operator of Sisters Movie House. "We are delighted to bring these two back along with the Coltrane documentary as part of our August Encores. Six days and six opportunities to see three very special movie events. This will be the very last time they show in Sisters - and probably central Oregon, since we have had all of them exclusively to this point."

Later this month, Sisters Movie House will announce the full line-up of its special event programming for the autumn, with features every other Tuesday from September through mid-December. The "Autumn Arts" series will showcase more museum-curated art and music documentaries, among other cultural specials.
