News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Helen Irene Smyth Sether - "Seth" March 25, 1928 - January 17, 2018

Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many, Helen Irene Smyth Sether ("Seth") received her "wings" on January 17. A feisty, intensely caring, creative, loving, hard-working, unconventional and very unique woman who earned big places in many, many hearts.

Helen's path started in Wolf Creek, Montana almost 90 years ago. She moved to Oregon growing up in Lebanon. She married Bill Sether and they had five children: Pamela, Rand, Valerie, Martin and Deborah over the next 10 years.

Helen blossomed after her retirement. She moved to Sisters and lived in a house built for her by her son, Rand, in Tollgate. She made many friends and experienced some of the best years of her life there. After returning back to Corvallis in 2012 she continued to make loving friends where she lived at Samaritan Village. Everywhere Helen lived she had a knack for developing special relationships with many people.

Always an avid gardener she spent countless hours creating beautiful gardens for herself and others. Helen never met a dog she didn't love! Helen was a voracious reader her whole life. And, she truly loved helping others in need. Generous and empathetic, Helen volunteered her time, and cheesecakes, to many charitable organizations wherever she lived.

To put it mildly - she truly was a special character!
