Girls basketball struggles

The Lady Outlaws continued to struggle to keep up with league foes this past week, and lost both their games - a 55-23 loss to the Falcons at Elmira on Tuesday, January 23, and a 52-24 road loss to Sutherlin on Friday.

Sisters created good opportunities to score in Tuesday's contest against Elmira, but just couldn't get their shots to fall. At the half the Outlaws were down 31-15.

The Outlaws only put one point on the scoreboard in the third period, compared to the Falcons, who scored 15. Elmira stayed strong throughout the remainder of the game and recorded the win.

Coach Alan Von Stein told The Nugget that Meaghan Greaney had her best game of the season, and played great on both offense and defense. Greaney scored six points, dished out two assists, and had two steals and two deflections.

Olivia Hougham and Sydney Head recorded two assists each.

"We got good looks at the basket, executed our offense well, but the ball just wouldn't go in," said Von Stein. "We had quality looks, but only shot 22 percent from the field."

Three days later, it was a similar situation. The Bulldogs were tenacious at the start of the first quarter, and the Outlaws quickly found themselves down 9-0. At the close of the period Sutherlin was on top 17-6. Sisters came out and won the second quarter, 11-9, but trailed 26-17 at the half.

Sisters was outscored 18-4 in the third. Sutherlin kept control of the contest, and went on to win by 28.

Gracen Sundstrom scored nine points for Sisters, and Rheanna Salisbury, Lexie Stewart, and Head contributed four points each.

The Outlaws did much better on the boards, and grabbed 36 on the night, compared to Sutherlin, who had 26. Sundstrom recorded seven rebounds, and Head, Salisbury, and Rylee Weber each had six.

Von Stein noted sophomore Hallie Schwartz for her great defensive effort, and stated she did an excellent job against Sutherlin's perimeter shooter.

The Lady Outlaws are currently 1-4 in league. Sisters will face Cottage Grove at home on Friday, February 2, to start out the second half of league play.
