Harry A. Orr, III May 19, 1930 - January 19, 2018

Harry Allen Orr, III passed away on January 19. He was 87 years old.

Born and raised in South Carolina, he early on distinguished himself for intelligence and motivation. He attended Fishburne Military Academy and graduated from Duke University NROTC in 1951. He married his life-long partner and best friend Ietje van Dobbenburgh later that year.

Harry served as ensign and later lieutenant in the U.S. Navy 1951-1954 and again 1961-1962. In between naval stints, Harry worked in the insurance business. Frustrated with his career and recalling how much he enjoyed working with his hands and building Heath kits as a child, Harry enrolled in dental school at University of Tennessee, Memphis, in 1963 and graduated in 1966. He spent two years in the public health service before establishing a private practice in Palo Alto, California in 1968. He and Ietje worked in the practice together until their retirement in 1990.

Harry and Ietje moved to Sisters in 1991. Harry always looked for ways to support others in the community. He helped establish and lead the High Meadow Homeowners Association, participated in the Book Club and was a champion for the Sisters High School Science Club and Flight Science Program.

Harry and Ietje were world travelers, visiting approximately 30 countries and all 50 states, many of them several times. They explored the backroads and byroads, always remarking how much they enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. They traveled Oregon extensively from the coast to the eastern desert. Harry greatly enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and snowshoeing many Central Oregon trails with friends. He was particularly fond of Black Butte and hiked it many times.

Harry was an avid reader, a passion he learned from his mother. His love of learning carried over into classical music, opera, cooking and a life-long passion for flying.

With his kindness and generosity of spirit he made good friends wherever he went. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. Harry is survived by Ietje; daughters, Chapin Orr Zakrzewski and Missy Orr (and husband Dave Bullamore); and grandchildren, Alyssa Kuwik (and husband Jordan Kuwik) and Garrett Zakrzewski.

A memorial service will be planned in Sisters in the summer. The family would like to thank St. Charles Hospice in Bend for its exceptional care and heartfelt attention to Harry in his final months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the Sisters High School Science Club or St. Charles Hospice.
