Norman F. Berhorst October 28, 1936 - March 10, 2018

Sisters resident Norman F. Berhorst passed away March 10, following an extended illness. He had lived in Sisters for the past 14 years and was well known by many for his sense of humor and his entertaining stories of his life.

Norman was born October 28, 1936 in St. Paul, Oregon, the son of Frank and Irene Berhorst. He graduated from St. Paul High School and served as an altar boy for the St. Paul Catholic Church.

He was active as a volunteer and participant in the St. Paul Rodeo beginning at the age of 18. In 1965, Norman and two other St. Paul residents traveled to Pendleton to participate in the wild horse race at the Pendleton Roundup. Norman was the one who climbed into the saddle while the other two held the bronco. Norm rode the bronco to the finish line. He and his friends were the winners and each received a championship buckle.

Norman later married Irene Mullen. After Irene passed away, he moved to Harrisburg and worked at a garbage service before buying the company and operating it as Norman's Garbage Service. In Harrisburg, Norman met Janet O'Brien and they married in 1989. In 2004, he sold the business and the couple moved to Sisters where he enjoyed 14 years as a volunteer at the Sisters Rodeo. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with family and friends throughout central and eastern Oregon.

In 2016, he and his Pendleton Roundup participants were honored by being named to the St. Paul Rodeo Hall of Fame.

Norman is survived by a son, Jeffory; his wife, Janet; and her children: Eugene B. O'Brien and wife Kari and their children Brandon, Josh, Megan, Mariah; Robert B. O'Brien, wife Jeanne, and his daughter Lindy; Scott O'Brien and wife Tayna and their children Scott Jr., Vincent, Anthony, Vander, Robbie, Scotty, and Arron.

Another son of Janet's, Ricky Wayne, is deceased.

A private family mass will be held at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Sisters on March 24. A memorial celebration of his life will be held on March 31 at 2 p.m. at Takoda's Restaurant.
