Outlaws split for week on the diamond

The Outlaws baseball team started their season with a 7-6 win over 5A Mt. View on Tuesday, March 13, but three days later fell 9-7 to Stayton.

In Tuesday's action, the Outlaws' season-opener ended with a sweet victory at home over Mt. View.

In the seventh inning, with the bases loaded, Hunter Spor drew a walk, and the Cougars were speechless as the Outlaws walked off the field with their first victory of the season.

The Outlaws started four freshmen and two sophomores, and the young squad stepped up, played with composure and earned the win.

Coach Reed Rainey said, "We kept competing and grinding, and eventually found a way to win. The weather was poor, but the kids played hard. I was very proud of how they competed in their first game.

Spencer Kemp and Austin Morss each had two hits in the game. Kemp went two-for-two, drew a walk, and scored two runs. Morss was two-for-two with one run and one RBI.

Garret Vohs and Taylor Fendall were both noted by Rainey for their good offensive production.

Dillon Tucker, Morss, and Turner Stutzman took care of the pitching duties and held Mt. View to two earned runs. Stutzman earned the win in relief.

In Friday's game against Stayton the Outlaws scored seven runs on five hits and Stayton scored nine runs on eight hits.

Sisters got a hot start with a 5-1 lead, but from there they were plagued by miscues and walks, which Stayton took advantage of. The Eagles forged ahead and earned the win.

Freshman Hunter Spor pitched well for the Outlaws in his first start of the year. Hunter pitched three solid innings, and also had a two-RBI double in the seventh. Turner Stutzman came in as relief and also pitched well, and struck out seven batters in two-and-a-half innings.

Austin Morss paced the Outlaws on offense with two hits and two RBI. Freshman Garrett Vohs was one-for-four with two RBIs.

Rainey said, "We made too many mistakes, and Stayton capitalized on every mistake we made. We are a very young team right now, both in age and experience, and we are learning as we go. There is no substitute for experience and game maturity at the varsity level, and we are gaining that each day. Once we get all of our players on the field, we will be fine."

The Outlaws were scheduled to play at home against Madras on Tuesday, March 20. Sisters will play at Crook County on Thursday, March 22.
