Tennis players hit the courts

The boys tennis squad played their first match of the season at Ridgeview on Thursday March 15, and battled through light hail, a bit of wind and rain, and in the end lost the contest 6-2.

Jed Kizziar dominated his match against Keven Vivenco at No. 1 singles, and won the match in two sets with scores of 6-1. 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Nate Weber persevered in a close match and came out on top. Nate fell 6-7 in a tie-breaker to Ethan Hicks, and came back to win in close second and third sets (6-4, 6-4). Weber was down 3-4 in the final set, but came back and won three games in a row for the victory.

Coach Carl Click said, "Nate's power game turned out to be too much for Hicks' finesse game."

Of his first varsity match, Weber said, "I was nervous because I'd never played a tennis match before and I was about to play a junior. But, after I won the second set to tie it up, I realized that I had a chance to beat this kid. So I gave it 100 percent and came out with a win."

Junior Jackson Rheuben and sophomore Jack Bullis, who are both new to the sport, forced their match to three sets. It was both tennis players' first match, and they stayed close in all three sets with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.

On Friday, the Outlaws were out-gunned by Redmond, a bigger school, and a more talented and experienced team. Sisters was shutout 8-0.

The girls tennis squad played at Ridgeview on Friday, March 16. Some time was spent mopping up the courts prior to the match due to the rain the day before. The weather was fairly nice for the match, and devoid of both rain and snow.

Rheanna Salisbury, for her first time at No. 1 singles, defeated Ciara Pinkerton for the Outlaws' lone win that came down to a 10-8 tiebreaker.

Coach Crystal Tosello said, "Rheanna rocked it as our line one singles. Although she was nervous, because she'd never played singles before, Rheanna was mentally tough and fought through the nerves. Her consistent ground strokes and ability to keep the ball in play helped her outlast her opponent."

"Everyone had a great attitude and it was good to play a talented team to really challenge the girls. It shows us where we need to improve and some key areas to work on."

The girls tennis team will play at home against Bend on Thursday, March 22. The boys will travel to Bend for their match.
