Women can learn about fire service in Sisters

The Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District is hosting a fast-paced, one-day glimpse inside the exciting world of emergency services. The event scheduled for April 14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Station at 301 S. Elm St. in Sisters, will provide participants - all women - an opportunity to learn more about local fire and emergency service agencies including: Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District, Black Butte Ranch Fire District, Cloverdale Fire District, USFS Sisters Ranger District, and Oregon Department of Forestry.

The event is not designed to teach women how to be a firefighter or emergency service worker, but will provide participants more of an awareness of what types of services local agencies provide, as well as allow them to participate in some fun activities at their individual comfort level. All activities will be led by women who are members of the local emergency service system.

Participants will: Learn about local fire agencies, their services and staffing and get a behind the scenes tour of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District Station 701 and equipment. They'll learn how to use a fire extinguisher on a real fire. There will be a briefing on current trends in CPR, including the Pulse Point App and on Automated External Defibrillators - how to use and where are they located.

Participants will get an overview of wildland fires, how they are extinguished and what are the tools and techniques used, with special emphasis on last summer's Milli Fire.

They will also learn about protective equipment that firefighters wear including self-contained breathing apparatus; how fire hydrants work (and to operate one); learn how to tie a rescue knot that every firefighter and rescuer in the country uses; learn how to use the Jaws of Life to remove a trapped victim in a car accident.
