Jazz on tap at The Belfry

Two groups from the Western Oregon University Music Department will perform at The Belfry in Sisters on Monday,

April 23.

Western Hemisphere Orchestra is directed by Dr. Tom Bergeron. The group plays music from North American jazz and popular music repertoires. For this show, the group will play a selection of songs by jazz composer/guitarist Pat Metheny.

Orquestra Brasil is directed by Dr. Cassio Vianna, and is dedicated to music from Brazil. The show will feature a wide-ranging selection of samba, bossa nova, and other genres - including several selections by the great Brazilian pianist-songwriter Ivan Lins.

Between them, the two groups comprise some two dozen graduate and undergraduate students-including winds, strings, rhythm sections, and singers. They are touring in Central Oregon for the first time.

Dr. Tom Bergeron has been teaching at WOU for nearly 30 years. He and his wife own a cabin in Camp Sherman, where they plan to spend most of their time after Tom retires in June.

Dr. Cassio Vianna is from Rio de Janeiro. He moved to Oregon in 2009. In addition to directing Orquestra Brasil, he teaches jazz piano at WOU.

The concert is open to the public. General admission is a suggested $5 donation. Students and seniors will be admitted without charge.

Showtime is 8 p.m. The Belfry is located at 302 E. Main Ave.
