Chimney fire damages home

A chimney fire that spread to a shake roof was swiftly extinguished thanks to a neighbor's quick call to 911, and an immediate response by Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District on Tuesday, April 10.

Renters and pets evacuated the home at 468 S. Cedar St. and got water on the fire, which had spread to the shake roof.

The first firefighting units on the scene found a fire on the roof near the chimney. The blaze, approximately 20 by 30 feet in area, was quickly extinguished with no damage to the living area of the home. Damage is estimated to be approximately $5,000. Fire crews removed burnt shingles and put down plastic on the damaged roof to help protect the structure from weather until new roofing can be installed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to be related to the wood stove, which was in use at the time of the fire. The home had working smoke alarms, but did not alert the renters, likely due to the fire being on the exterior of the home, fire officials reported.

Firefighters note that chimneys and vents should be cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional at least once a year.

Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District responded with four emergency vehicles and 10 personnel. Additional units from Black Butte Ranch and Cloverdale Fire Districts also responded to the fire but were canceled prior to arrival.
