Lady Outlaws nab first win in tennis

The Lady Outlaws tennis squad marked a 5-3 victory over North Marion on Friday, April 13 to nab their first win of the season.

Sisters' top three doubles teams and top two singles teams recorded victories to give the Outlaws their first win of the season in their match against North Marion.

Coach Crystal Tosello said, "It was great to play a school that's closer to our size. It felt great to get a win, and I can't wait to ride that excitement into our packed schedule for next week."

Rheanna Salisbury defeated Martinez 7-5, 6-1, in the top singles spot with her great backhands. Her match started off a bit rocky, but she used her mental game to turn it around.

Mary Florian beat Bahena 6-4, 6-1. Mary focused on good footwork and great backhands to earn the win.

Rylee Weber and Hawley Harrer, (No. 1 doubles) dominated play. They had good chemistry and worked together to post the 6-0, 6-0 win over Bravo and S. Perez.

"They played their game; aggressive at the net, great strokes, and great serves," said Tosello.

Alexa Asson and Sophia Silva played doubles together for the first time. They used great volleys and aggressive net play to defeat A. Perez and Cha with scores of 6-2, 6-3.

Hallie Schwartz and Lola Green used good footwork and movement, and an aggressive net game to record the win over Brassel and Lader at 6-2, 6-3.

Three days earlier, the Outlaws lost 1-7 to Redmond in their first home match of the season. Sisters was short several of their best singles players, and the result was a loss at all four spots.

Hannah Ezell and Sophia Silva were the lone winners at No. 4 doubles.

Ezell and Silva worked well together, and didn't let the pressure get to them. They lost the first set 4-6, but came back strong with a 6-0 win in the second set, and won the match in a 10-3 tie-breaker.

"Sophia had great volleys and was very aggressive at the net, and Hannah had consistent ground strokes and lobs," said Tosello. "The combination of their skills is perfect for a doubles team, and helped them secure the win."

Harrer and Weber, at No. 1 doubles battled hard, but lost in a 10-point match tiebreaker. The duo won the first set with their aggressive net game, but lost the next in a tiebreaker (1-7), and went on to lose the match-breaker 10-12.

Sisters was to play at home against Corbett on Monday, April 16, in a match that was rescheduled due to bad weather earlier in the season. They also were to play at Cascade on Tuesday. They will face the Eagles at Stayton on Thursday to wrap up their week.
