News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters Habitat for Humanity and Lowe's are calling on women across Sisters Country to get involved in their community during National Women Build Week 2018. More than 18,000 women construction volunteers unite nationwide to build up their communities with Habitat homeowners.
National Women Build Week runs May 5-13. In preparation for the project, Sisters Habitat is asking women to sign up to volunteer May 8-12.
"We're excited to partner with Lowe's to educate, inspire and empower women to advocate and help Habitat homeowners love where they live through building or improving an affordable place they can call home," said Darleene Snider, Sisters Habitat construction manager. "We want to engage women of all skill levels to join their friends, families and neighbors to build up their communities and lend a hand to Habitat by signing up for a How to Use Tools Safely clinic on Saturday, May 5. The clinic will equip women on the build site, and offer the volunteers invaluable skills to bring back and use in their everyday life."
Snider will lead the team of women volunteers at the Village Meadows subdivision (corner of McKinney Butte Road and Desert Rose Loop). This is her fifth year as a team leader and she is excited to work with women in the community landscaping a home, framing walls and building heat and garage container enclosures with three Habitat homeowners.
Shifts during the build week will run Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No construction skills are needed to participate during the event, Snider said.
To sign up for the clinic and to volunteer during Women Build week, volunteers should contact Marie Clasen at 541-549-1193. Volunteers participating in the build week should be prepared to attend an orientation on Wednesday, May 2, at 5:30 p.m. at the Sisters Library.
