News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Riders in Sisters can get their wheels down in the dirt - and up in the air - at Bike park 242 this week.
Three years in the making, the bike park located next to the Sisters Park & Recreation District's Coffield Center at the west end of the Sisters High School parking lot offers thrills for riders of a variety of skill levels.
Volunteer Bike Park 242 committee members Joel Palanuk, Bob Hoffman, Brittany Simonis and Casey Meudt were out last weekend with other workers putting the finishing touches on the park's initial features.
"We're in the process of finishing and packing the jumplines," Meudt explained.
There are three jumplines ranging in challenge from beginner level to "Black Diamond."
Eventually, the park will also feature rock and wood mountain bike skill features for those who want to practice their trail-riding skills without catching massive air.
The project was funded through a $25,000 matching grant from Oregon Parks and Recreation, matched through fundraising. That work will continue, Meudt said.
Volunteers will "adopt" sections of the park for ongoing maintenance.
There are plans for pro clinics and activities through SPRD, but the primary use is as a free, public park.
The committee is planning a grand-opening celebration in June, but the park is ready to roll this week.
"It's rideable," said Palanuk. "Have fun. Be safe. WEAR A HELMET!"
