Feeding hungry buckaroos at rodeo

A hearty breakfast is just what's needed to keep a cowboy on the trail - or a rodeo fan full of fun.

For over 30 years, the Sisters Kiwanis Club has cooked a pancake breakfast on Rodeo Sunday at the rodeo grounds entrance. Fifty Kiwanis volunteers serve up stacks of pancakes, bacon, sausage, cooked-to-order eggs, orange juice, milk and coffee.

On June 10, seven grills will prepare breakfast for 1,000 hungry buckaroos who will consume 225 pounds of pancake mix, 300 pounds of bacon, 200 pounds of sausage patties and 180 dozen eggs.

Kiwanian Earl Schroeder, who plans the food purchases, describes the breakfast: "It's not just the food. What I like best is maybe sitting at a table with Sisters folks, rodeo visitors, the Rodeo queen, bronc riders, and grizzled cowboys. It exemplifies the spirit of Sisters and is a great social experience."

The Kiwanis motto is "serving the children of the world." The breakfast clearly illustrates that motto. All proceeds go to Sisters Kiwanis in support of Sisters youth. Recipients include high school scholarships, Sisters Park & Recreation District, Family Access Network, Sisters Science Club, Healthy Beginnings, Little League, Sisters school bands, the local dental van and many others.

The breakfast runs from 7 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 10, at the Sisters Rodeo grounds entrance. Adults cost $12; children 4 to 12 years old are $5; children 3 and under are free.
