News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws notched a big 49-7 win in their league opener on the road at Elmira on Friday, September 20.
Sisters opened with a massive 17 play drive to start the contest. The drive took almost 10 minutes off the first quarter and was capped by a Kale Mock three yard run off the right side. Reid Woodson’s PAT was good and the Outlaws took a 7-0 lead that held through the end of the period.
In the second quarter, Elmira answered on their opening drive when they hit a screen pass that went 33 yards for the score. Their PAT was good and the Falcons knotted up the game at 7-7.
The Outlaws turned the ball over on their second possession, but after the defense held they put together another long 10 play drive. Mock finished the drive with his second score of the night on a 19 yard run. Woodson’s kick was good and Sisters pushed to a 14-7 advantage.
Sisters held the Falcons to three-and-out and forced a punt, which was blocked by Weston Davidson, and the Outlaws found themselves in great field position in the Falcons territory. On the ensuing play from the 21 yard line, Hudson Beckwith made a dynamic run around the right side and cut it back for a touchdown (TD). The PAT failed, and teams entered the half with the Outlaws on top 20-7.
The Outlaws dominated the second half. Elmira was held scoreless and Sisters scored on every one of their possessions. The Outlaws ran the ball very well the remainder of the contest behind the solid play of their offensive line.
Mock scored his third TD of the night on an explosive trap play up the middle for 38 yards. Dawson Roberson ran it in for the two point conversion to make it a 28-7 Outlaw lead.
The Outlaws had another big drive on their next possession, which was highlighted by a long run by Mock that took Sisters down to the goal line. Mock scored his fourth TD of the night on a one yard run. The PAT failed but Sisters extended their lead to 34-7.
Reese Moore joined in on the scoring fest and found his way into the end zone on a well blocked and hard run from eight yards out. Trent Gordon’s kick for the PAT was good and the Outlaws easily put the game out of reach at 41-7.
Sisters closed out their scoring spree late in the final period on a six play drive. The drive was capped by a four yard run by Dawson Roberson behind a monster block by Garrett Sager. After a bad snap, Beckwith ran it in for the two point conversion. Time expired and Sisters recorded the win.
On defense, Kolbi Cotner and Beckwith both had interceptions for the Outlaws. Cotner also led the team with seven tackles, followed by Tabor Garcia who tallied six, and Kale Gardner who added five and an assist.
Coach Gary Thorson told The Nugget that the Outlaws got great play from the defensive side of the ball from Cotner from his safety position and Garcia from his linebacker position.
Thorson said, “The defense played well most of the night. Elmira had some moments moving the ball, but the defense did a good job tightening down when they had to and made some good plays to stop them when they were threatening in our territory.”
On offense, six Outlaw running backs combined for 334 yards on the ground for the game. They were led by Mock who tallied 135 yards on 15 carries. Beckwith was second in rushing with three carries for 57 yards.
Quarterback’s Hunter Bronson and Trent Gordon combined went four-for-seven with 64 yards passing. Fifty eight of those yards were to Landon Scott on three catches.
The Outlaws got good line play from Garcia, Sager, and Jozua Miller, and the backs and receivers did another great job blocking for their teammates.
Thorson told The Nugget that the blocking by their skill position players (Beckwith, Cotner, Landon Scott, and Spencer Davis) has been a huge plus for them the last two seasons, and they take a lot of pride in how well they do that for each other.
“We came into the week pretty banged up, but had a good week of practice and got a few people healthy as we went into the game,” said Thorson. “It was a great way to start league play and we got to play some of our younger plays in the game, which is always fun to see.”
“Due to injuries we have not been able to play a full JV schedule yet, and have been limited to just playing a fifth quarter on some Friday nights,” added Thorson. “That group has been successful as well, and is doing a good job. We are off to a good start this year, but just have to take it one day at a time and focus on what we have in front of us on that particular day.”
